Kettle Cleaning

I seem to be have all sorts of cleaning issues at my place.....

Anyhoo, when I drilled out the hole for the ball valve on my brew kettle I used WD-40 as a lubricant.  Now there's some residual oil on the inside of the kettle.  Anyone know of a good way to get it out of there.  I figured hot water and dishsoap will break down the oil but I don't know for sure.  The last thing I want is an oil flavored beer.

Next time you visit LHBS or place an on-line order, grab some PBW (powdered brewers wash),. Use the solution amount they say 1-2oz per 5 gallons, and boil it in your pot. Let it soak overnight and you won't have any issues. You can store the solution for weeks as well and tranfer it as you need it for other jobs. Oxy-clean works well too, but PBW is the shiznit.

I'll give props to PBW as well.  Been using 1 step for years and after using PBW I'll never go back.  1 step leaves that damn hard to remove residue, doesn't break down tough beer stone...PBW is the way to go!

maybe try rubbing alcohol? i used that on a non beer related project to clean up some WD40 and it worked okay.. darn oil spils

PBW ALL THE WAY.... THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED POWDER BREWERY WASH AND MOST BREWERY'S USE IT......

I used oxyclean to soak an aluminum pot and it looks like it oxidized it.  Is my aluminum ruined for brewing?

It is probably good that you pot oxidized. Now that there is that layer of oxidized aluminum, there is no way for your beer to come into contact with anything that it will react with. Basically, you probably made you pot more stable at the cost of appearances. Just be sure to sanitize well, since the surface is much more pockmarked.
