local supply

let me ask ya'll something.

Do you guy prefere to shop at the local supply shops(if you have one) or do you
prefere to shop on line?

Went to the local supply shop yesterday and I half to say, unless I need something they don't have I'll try and stay local.

Dayton Ohio area. http://schwartzbeer.com/

Just curious.

My local shops is about 150 miles away and is, as far as I know, the only one in the state.  They don't have nearly the selection that the online guys have but when I'm passing through town I'll usually pick up some supplies.

I prefer to shop at local supply shops because it's near in our house. It's more comfortable to choose the best product if you see it clearly. In addition, shopping at local supply shops is more convenient and affordable.

I always like the local guys, unless their prices are just too high (>25 - 30% when including shipping cost from online) or they don't have what I need.  If you need something in a pinch on brew day, they are the only ones who can help out, so I like to try to keep them in business.

I only buy online if my local brew shop does not have what I require.   I want to keep my local shopkeepers in business because I really appreciate the advice and expertise I gain from every trip to their store.  If I didn't have this in my town, I would probably try to buy as much as possible in bulk so that I could reduce the shipping needed, and have a small personalized homebrew shop in my closet.

I hear ya there, one of the guys at the place we went to last Saturday helped me out
picking out  yeast for some cider.

I thought I knew what I was looking at.
I've got such a long way to go.

Going to the LHBS is always a treat for me!  Even if I know exactly what I want, I walk the entire floor area, hoping to find something exciting & new to play with!  I haven't bought online yet, because Northern Brewer is literally one block from my workplace, but I have seen some decent deals online.  Maybe I will branch out a bit sometime wink

Yeah, I was like a kid in a candy shop. lol

The thing I've noticed in buying online, you may think you're getting a good deal,
then your (whatever you bought) shows up at the door and is a total piece of crap.

My buddy got screwed on his boiling pot. I'd beat money we could cook a hole right threw the bottom of this thing.

At least at  a local shop, you can see what your paying for.

I shop almost exclusively online.  I hate to say it, but this can be an expensive hobby as it is and paying $8.50 for a White Labs tube that I can get for $6 or $65 for a sack of Crisp Maris Otter that including shipping costs me $55 online, I'll keep shopping online.
