Maltmill
I'm thinking of getting a Barley Crusher Maltmill......do any of you guys have one or what do you use???.......
I wish I could... can't afford it. I use a plain old mill like you get to use at the LHBS I got off ebay for like 35.00. Never caused me any trouble though and average around 75% efficiency.
Have the crankenstien, made a hopper and motorized it works mint...
I have the Barley Crusher Maltmill and it works great. I chose this one over the others out there because it already comes with a hopper and the adapter to fit on a 6.5 gal bucket. Also, the default spacing of the rollers makes a perfect crush so there not really any need to make adjustments once you receive it. It's ready to go as soon as you open the box.
I'll second what 1n1m3g said. I too have the Barley Crusher (I got the 7# hopper with mine) and it provides a great crush straight out of the box. Now to just motorize it.....
I have been toying with the idea of the purchase, really the last piece of the puzzle. The only thing holding me back is the convenience of internet delivery, premeasured and precrushed. I work til 8 each weeknoight and late on weekends, so LHBS is usually out- not to mention the price difference. I do go through about 75# of 2 row and 25-30# of marris otter a month, so how much would I really save buying bulk? $10-20? Still I feel like it is the last step to really starting your beer from scratch. (Watch next year I will be growing barley in the back 40 and roasting it mtself!) But if I were to buy one I hear the crankandsteins are unbeatable, thebirdman's setup is sick, but 1m1n3g (we need you a nickname) makes a great and valid point.
I've had the barley crusher for about a year and a half. Like everyone said right out of the box it gives a great crush. I average about 75-80% efficiency. That being said in the last 6 months I have not been very pleased with it. Maybe I just brew too much and have worn it out but the rollers have become very hard to turn. It will all of a sudden in the middle of the grind start free spinning without crushing the grain. I end up sticking the back end of my mash spoon in to pack the grain between the rollers to get it started again. This happens continually when I use the drill, so I went to cranking by hand and it got a little better but still stops about 20 times throughout a 10 lb. grain bill. I've taken it apart cleaned everything out several times since the issue came up to no avail. Kind of sucks that what used to take me 3-5 min. now takes 20-25 min. of hand cranking. I've always cleaned it dry with a paint brush like it recommends as well. I guess I'm on the market for a new one.

Sounds like I am now leaning towards the crankandstein. Thanks for the field testing.
I'm also running a barley crusher with the 15 lb. hopper. Never had a problem with it and never had to change the crush setting.
Andrew - you should contact the Barley Crusher folks. I'm sure they would diagnose and fix whatever problem you're having, especially since the mill has a lifetime warranty.

Does anyone use or no anyone with a "grain gobbler" from More beer??
