Most expensive batch ever...ever!!

My most recent batch, a robust porter.  I love it!  I made a new whirlpool immersion chiller, and used my new crusher, and my new pump(even though it stopped pumping halfway through..my fault there)...And not one of those prebuilt one....This thing was a beast!  Almost the enitire width of the pot!  Huge!  Insanely effective!  And now, dead!  F!  F!  F!  F!  F!!  There's a quick summary of what I said when I pulled it out the shed to clean it up for another batch.  Apparently, getting 99.4% of the water out isn't good enough, and as it sat in the shed..outside; it collected in two coils..and yeah, it F'ING, F'ING, F'ING BURST!!!!!!!!  F!  F!  F!   Now I have this monster of a coil, with two gaping holes in it.  I may try to salvage some of the work.  I spent a shitload of $$ on this..way more than needed, but it was like a project.  A real do-it-myself thing.....I was thinking I could maybe just make it smaller than 50', or cut and patch the damaged areas...all I know is this..F!    And I'm probably building a rolling setup, and getting a friggen plate chiller....new summertime project.  And until then, I'll be chilling in the snow....

Man that sucks.  I'd totally fix that chiller by cutting out the busted pieces and sweating new pieces in or using compression fittings.   I tried chilling in the snow on Sunday and it took forever.  I ended up bringing my kettle inside and running my chiller off the kitchen sink.

I would simply call 1-888- BILLY-MAYS and get some of that fix it putty! smile

Sorry to make light of your woes. There has to be some kind of patch though. Or cut the sections out, and sweat a coupler in there. I am no expert but that is all the advice I can offer (while I run out to the garage and bring in my HERMS coil!)

last week for my 1 degree Blond, I brought almost every piece of equipt into my mudroom the day before, just to let it get to a tolerable temp.

Yeah...I probably will just cut and repair...but I GD burned myself so many friggen times, the first damn time...I hate soldering and welding...I can do both, but totally suck at not getting burned...

I was thinking if I do cut it, I can make it tighter.  It looks a bit beat up, because it is.  I was eager to use, and didn't use enough copper tie downs to keep it fully solid.  I still want to get a setup rig.  I have to...it kills to have to store everything.  I'm thinking of getting a smaller pre built shed to hold a framework and the cooking stuff.

I just want to brew my IPA....I'm dying to get it done...it's going to be long, stay outside all day, continuous hop brew session, and this 26 degrees just isn;t working for me  I already know I'll have to mash in the kitchen..I'll probably run the hose through the window and pump it to the kettle so I don't have to move the tun around......

Thirsty..I think I could have all my equipment stolen, and you'd still find a way to make me laugh man....that Billy Mays guy is my freakin idol...he does nothing but talk loudly, and confidently about whatever he gets paid to push...and all it started with Oxiclean I think.  The guy is a millionaire...shit, with a million I'd build all of us phat brew sheds with secret tunnels and other stealthy stuff....

I am strongly leaning at a plate chiller myself when I go to all grain. Copper is expensive and just a 25 ft coil of 3/8 copper is 50 bucks and up here. Plate chillers are more expensive but might be more durable, definately less bulky.

Yes, yes yes, get a plate chiller.  less bulky is right taking 2 pounds up from the basement instead of 30 is great.  Also you can chill right into your fermenters, that's what sold me, killing 2 birds with one stone, and saving time is fantastic.

What's a plate chiller?  I've seen several types of wort chillers in action and honestly havn't been too impressed.  I've just been doing ice baths lately and it seems to be pretty quick.
