New Chiller....
So after my newly crafted monster sized whirlpool immersion chiller burst over the Winter, then fell off the table I didn't feel like even thinking about fixing the damn thing....so I said screw it and jumped on Thirstys ship......I now have a Shiron plate chiller w/ backflush thingy...Technically, it's still in the box, but I have it. I just took apart the pump to clean it from last November....it wasn't that bad. 30 minutes in hot PBW and it was clean and rinsed.
Now all I need is some sort of cart or stand to hold the chiller and pump. I'll probably have to build one from wood, and throw on some cheap casters for movement.....I still want to get an inline thermometer, but for now I have a nice digital from Santa....
Time to open the box, and get another fucking beer.
Slainte!
I haven't even opened the chiller box yet, and I'm a little pissed..
I wish I used my head and thought about the process of the backflush. I could have built one these for maybe $6. I already had the hose and clamps. The brass fittings are probably going to be replaced with QDs.....F! $18.95 for this stupid thing. I fell like bashing my temples with it....
I dont' even use a back flush, I hook the wort inlet to my cellar faucet, and turn on the hot water, and it cost me nothing.
soak it in some starsan, good to go.
I have the problem with a table now too, I have my pump, but my pump has one 1/2 inch port, and a 1i nch port. Now I have to go to Home depot, and get some 1 inch attachments, when I already had the 1/2 inch ready.
Yea yea, I know I bet I have some 1 inch attachments in the bedroom, I know how you guys think.
Okay, so the chiller in hand is pretty cool. The threads are capped with a plastic piece, and they are certainly as reported sharp as hell.....I didn't cut myself, but I can just tell....I'll probably wrap them in teflon, and throw a QD on for good and just use attachments.....
Also, I can't see a way to mount it to anything. It has no mounting plate, points, or attachments...I suppose I could zip-tie it to the wood itself for each session so I can let it boil.......
I can't believe I bought a stupid backflush!! WTF!!!
WTF!

What about fabricating or buying some kind of bracket that could be screwed or bolted down? I'm sure a walk through Lowe's or Home Depot would lend itself a solution or at least a few ideas.

I know how you feel. When I built my MT I bought one of those Kewler Kitz bulkhead things with a ball valve and hose barb. The stupid thing cost me over $30. When it came in and I looked at it I couldn't help but think that I could build one myself for less than half that price. Plus I needed to take a trip to home depot to pick up a holesaw to make the appropriate sized hole in the cooler.
After I got home and drilled the hole I realized that the damned nipple that it came with was too short to fit through the cooler. So I had to take another trip to home depot to buy the right length nipple. Oh well, you live you learn.
I built my high tech back flush hose for the 2.50 it cost for a garden hose to hose barb fitting. I attached it to about 2 feet of hose, just jam the hose onto the barb that's permanently on my chiller, and hit the water. clean.
Maybe you can return it? you could probably still come out ahead, even if you pay the return shipping for it.

This was my solution to the mounting.
I got the brackets at, yup you guessed it, home cheapo, for abot $3. After trial and error with many things to use as a retaining pin, my buddy's wife coughs up and says "why dont you use one of this little wrench thingies that is shaped like an L?" So turned out an allen key with a slight bend fits just right, and keeps the chiller in its cradle, and then just pull the key out to remove it, works friggin great.
About the backflush, man that is what this board is for! I would never buy an accessory without consulting here to find out if it is necessary or duplicatable (a word?) Depending on the type of disconnects you choose to use, you can simply remove your hose from the water in port, and plug it into the wort out port and blast. This should give you an idea of what I mean:
And for the love of God, if you go out and buy a beergun- don't buy the accessory kit!

I can see getting the ball valve and nipples or hose barbs at a local hardware store but doesn't the Kewler Kitz come with a special nut/ oring which keeps the thing from leaking? I am about to modify one and if I could get the stuff locally that would be sweet.
Yes Bull, it comes with a brass hex nut, a couple of high temp o-rings, and two large fender washers to keep it from leaking. But, these are sill pretty much off the shelf parts that you can get from a hardware store or a plumbing supply shop. I can post some pics of what it looks in all put together in another thread tomorrow if you'd like. I gotta pull out the MT for a brewday tommorrow anyway.
Yeah, Mort-
Please do post a pic of that. I'm about to buy one of those 60 qt cube coolers at Wally World for a MT & already have a 1/2" ball valve & the necessary drill bit.
I actually just use a bottling bucket valve assembly on my 60Qt cube mash tun.
All the nuts and gaskets were there. Very cheap.
