OK to pump hot wort?.....

Well, as the subject states, is it ok to pump hot wort?  Of course, provided it doesn't create too much HSA during transfer......would it be okay to use a pump to drain hot wort from the kettle......

Absolutely. The key is to let the lines prime first, so they fill w/ the wort displacing the air, once filled, the system is closed so all you are pumping is liquid- not air. Just make sure you have a good pump. The pump of choice is the March 809 http://morebeer.com/view_product/17311/ … phone_Pump
I have used this for over 50 batches and runs great, I think dartgod has the same on his rig. There are other self priming pumps, but you can't run hot liquid over 150 deg through them. The head is removable w/ 4 screws, I just bring it in after each brewday, take the housing apart and rinse it, put it all back together in less than 5 minutes- works great.

Here is a pic of mine in action, which points out another good point, make sure the lines can also handle the high temps. My garden hose busted here transferring hot water out of the plate chiller, wasn't even that hot, so make sure you use tubing that is rated!

Thanks for the info...I figured it was okay, and that's the exact pump I was looking at.  At least I know someone who uses it.....although, my company blocks access to all image sites, including Photobucket; so it's a no-go here at work.  I'll check it out when I get home, if I can pull myself away from the HDTV.......

I was looking at some food-grade hose as well....I can't remember where I saw it, but it was around $10 a foot, 1 1/2 inches(not sure if it was OD or ID), and could handle temps of 200F+.....

So while we're on the subject. Would a syphon or racking tube work also as long as the tubing was rated to handle the hot wort or would the plastic racking tube melt? If it would work it would be a good way to transfer wort to fermentor and leave the hops trub behind.

This is the stuff you want to use http://morebeer.com/view_product/17608/ … y_the_Foot Anything that is above room temp, it is better safe than sorry. I have it for all my hot transfers and HERMS, $2.10/ft but well worth it.
