plate chiller upgrade
well I finally did it. I bit the bullet today and ordered my shirron plate chiller. I ended up getting it from northern brewer. cheap price and basically every other place was out of stock. I can't wait! I also ordered 50.00 woth of hop rhizoms... expensive day!!
Cool.....For sure let us know how you like it. I was thinking about a plate chiller, but the good ol' $$$ always stops me...I still need to build a mashtun, but a better and faster way to chill is always on my list.....
One word of advice before you use it, respect it.
The threads for the hose connections are like razor blades, and while you screw on the connection for one port it is very easy to run the back of your fingers across the other port, you will slice yourself wide open!
A set of QD's permanantly attached is what I would reccomend to avoid the constant hooking up of hoses.
The CPC QD's are great because you can hook one up to your garden hose and it is the same size as the one connecting to the wort in/out so you can backfluch the chiller as soon as you are done with it, not letting any wort harden.
A snapshot of my setup, and cleaning is a breeze, I hear a lot of people complaining about cleaning a plate, but a quick back flush and submersion in boiling water right after for 15 min and good to go.
You will absolutely love the time you save. Are you gravity or pump feeding?
gravity, I could choke up the 90.00 for the chiller, but not another for a pump.... yet!
make sure you get it good and clean after you use it..i just used mine and flushed it out before hand and found like an ounce of old old old hops that had gotten pasted inside of it.
Oh yeah and a thrumometer is not a bad idea either, You can control your flow rate and if it comes out too fast or too slow you may be filling your carboy w/ 90 deg or 50 deg wort.
BAH-Humbug!
thirsty i may need to get a thrumometer, i ended up having to add boiling water to my wort because it cooled down to 48 degrees... stupid cold weather.
