Randall the enamel animal
Anybody have any experience w/ drinking from this at DFH brewery? Looks somewhat simple to make, looks just like my water filter canister. Can it be as easy as just puling out the filter and loading it w/ leafs, passing my liquid out line through it? All I want for x-mas is some more hops...
I saw that thing on TV on the show mentioned in another post.....I think it's a bit ridiculous personally, but I'd probably try a glass of hops beer anyway....
personally all of this hops stuff makes me queezy. doesn't matter what kind of hops it is, sometimes to much is to much.
I've tried a few pints from different versions. One was made out of PVC and another from a 1-gallon corny. Any inline filter canister will work.

What exactly is it and what does it do?

It's a giant hops filter system. You take fresh beer from the tap, which gets pumped into the canister, where it is run through the hops, and then right into your glass. That way, you get the freshest essential hops oils as part of the flavour. I think it's way overkill....in my mind, over adding hops is a way to conceal an otherwise shitty brew. I'm not saying DFH makes a bad beer, but I just don't see the point.......

To each his own... Ricka182 is right, it is waaayy overkill. So is Stone's ruination over 100 IBU's and Pliny the elder in the 150 range. True bitterness stops at the detectable 100ish level, but aroma is a different sense and hopheads can't get enough. To say it is unecessary is an opinion, the profile just may not be your bag, to me I sip 120 min, brew 100 IBU beers, chew some leafs before adding to boil just to give my mouth a shock while I am drinking a 100 IBU beer. I LOVE HOPS! Ask me 2 years ago, and I would say no thanks- I'll stick to my oatmeal stouts and belgians, friends that were nothing but SA drinkers before try my hopscotch that I keep 75-100 and they love it. Our new session beer for games and BBQ's is now DFH 60, SA and local micros are now too sweet to evryone else, who knows, 2 years from now I may be a kolsch drinker- I doubt it...
As far as the randall goes, I am curious as too the potency of aroma running post carbonated beer through it, I haven't dryhppoed in the keg yet, but the 90 min that I did on friday will dafinately get this.
Remember like Patrick Henry the famous patriot is remembered being quoted " Give me hops or give me death!"
Yeah, it is to each his own I guess........I love the aroma of fresh hops as well, but it's the 100+ IBU stuff that I'm not a big fan of........Right now, I prefer Belgian and Wheats, but maybe someday I'll be a hophead as well...regardless, it's beer, and that's that matters....
I'm sure there are people here who would like to try Randal for themselves. Even though I think it's overkill, I'd still like to try. I found a list of bars and pubs that either have a Randal of their own, or have an order for one placed with DFH....I'll probably head to a local beer heaven, The Sunset Grill.........

Beer heaven it is. I prefer there over taco mac in Atlanta all day long. Their steak tips are nuts. Do you know if they already have their randal or is it on order? I may have to make a road trip out to Chestnut Hill and do some x-mas shopping down. Good call.
