As official president of the Refractometer Fan Club, I'd encourage anyone wondering about replacing their clunky old hydrometer with a fantastic new gadet to do so. Ease of use and simplicity, makes brew day that much smoother.
i'll echo that, and add that I consider it an essential piece of brew gear if you do all grain. the ability to check gravity on the fly with only a few drops (and no temp correction) makes life much easier when you're sparging...
one thing to note, it's not the be-all end-all of brew gear, because FG readings require an adjustment based on OG, but I believe all brewing software (and I know for sure that ProMash has it) includes the corrections...
I haven't touched a hydrometer (I don't even know where it is) in 2 years and do everything I used to do, just plug it into ProMash for your FG reading and keep sampling till you hit it. Best of all it's one drop! On brew day I just boil until I hit my target, checking every 10-15 minutes as I go. Has drastically improved my brewing.
