Secondary fermenter size
I am thinking of tackling a flavored beer in a few batches and want to employ a secondary fermenter. My question is if I have a 5 gallon batch, will a 5 gallon carboy be large enough for a secondary? I don't plan on adding any sugar (adding vanilla for flavor) so do not anticipate a lot of activity. Is this cutting it too close, or should I be ok?
A 5 gallon secondary is the proper and most common way to go as long as you aren't adding anything with sugars in it.......the small headspace allows less contact with O2 after transfer......
Thanks. Thats what I assumed, though I was unsure of the reasoning behind it. Time to start building up the equipment collection.
If you are adding sugar, should you bump up to a 6 gallon for the headspace? I've been looking for some, but they seem harder to track down.
Thanks again.
6 gallon primary on the right......5 gallon secondary on the left......
