Spigot Stuff
Minor disaster last night.
I was kegging my annual Apple Pie Melomel, and the spigot on my oldest fermenting bucket was broken.
I guess after over 15 years the plastic gets brittle.
I must have cracked it while cleaning.
While racking from 2ndry to the bucket, I noticed some leakage & thinking the spigot was open, tried to close it & widened the crack. Lost about 1 gal of the precious brew all over the floor.
Anyway, got the broken spigot out this morning, and the hole diameter is 1-3/8".
Haven't been able to find anything but 1".
Any ideas?
Never mind,
I called where I bought them, & they have replacement faucets but they're not in the catalog,
about $5 each.
I'll be getting one for each fermenter.
That's a bummer though, loosing a gallon of perfectly good apple pie mellomel. I'd still be cursing today. Lesson to all, if you're using old equipment, test it! Probably would've happened to me too.
Replace the bucket too. You are right with respect to the plastic getting brittle, but that happens even to the plastic in the bucket, especially if the bucket is left in sunlight. You may be at the point where the bucket will crack with very little force on the new spigot. Just a thought.
Got the new spigot in, no problem, & no leaks.
The buckets still seem pretty flexible, so I think I'm good for another decade or so.
I figured out that while I was rolling & scrubbing the bucket horizontally in the sink, I cracked the old spigot.
As I empty the other two, I'll replace them also.
No point in waiting for another disaster when you can prevent it.
Pre-emptive measures, I love it! Racking my own in a few minuets, I'll make sure to check my stuff thoroughly before I do!
