A tun toss up?

couldn't you fly sparge in a rectangular cooler if you built a manifold of some sort to spread the entering water out? It would not rotate like a sparge arm but it should spread the water out.

Yep, plenty of people built a sparging manifold to add water in a rectangular cooler similar to their collection manifold under the grain bed.

I ran across this on the MrMalty Website......you wouldn't have to build one and you could fly or batch sparge with it depending on your preference......

74.95 isn't that expensive.........hmm

Well it's done.  A 60 qt igloo on wheels.  It wasn't hard to make a manifold in the bottom, the existing spout is at an angle and a bit elevated, so after coming into the cooler I had to elbow down to the base.  The spigot also comes with a nut on it.  As it goes after taking the nut off I found a handy o-ring to reuse, then just a male on one side and a female on the other of CPVC for a tight fit.  There is a barb fitting coming off of the valve to hook hose to.  Just a note for those who search out this thread in the future:  I ended up re-doing the manifold arms.  Initially I had done them with a hack saw blade on a sawzall.  That ended up leaving a lot of crud stuck in the pipe.  Drilling with a small bit was much cleaner.  Anyway, I filled it with hot water and it drained everything but 3 cups left in the bottom.  Grand total of $40 ish.  No special internet order fittings, just the plumbing isle at Home Depot.

Very easily. Your mash before you have any runoff will be holding quite a bit of water. If you add some water from the top through a sparge arm and let it raise to the level of about 1-2 inches above the grainbed. Then you can fly sparge with no channeling even in a rectangular cooler, keeping the level well above the grainbed.
