Used Bottle Caps

Ok I know that bottle caps are very cheap and this question might seem a little useless, but, I forgot to order bottle caps with my last order and am a little short.  As I have no local homebrew shop could I use twist off bottle caps or should I just let my beer hang out in the fermentor longer?  Thanks smile

Never use cheap, or used bottle caps. Just keep your beer in the carboy longer, and order some new caps.

Also, I would avoid using the cheap caps, especially the soda cap overrun kind (the ones that already have a name printed on them).

For a few cents more per cap, I use OxyCaps. They have a liner inside that helps absorb any harmful oxygen that's gets in the beer during bottling.

I have beers that still taste great after being in the bottle 5-6 years.

Order caps.  If you can afford to, buy extra of anything like this that you will always need more of.  Buy double caps this time because you know you will need more next time.  Try to keep one of everything one brew ahead of when you need it.  I recommend this mainly because you do not live near a homebrew supply shop.  You have to keep a mini supply shop in your homebrewery.

I agree with the posts above.

I've often left batches longer before bottling to fit into my schedule.

I agree with most, there's nothing wrong with ordering caps & waiting. But I disagree with the over-run cap statement. Over-runs are just that, over-run caps. They were manufactured for small breweries & these breweries have no problem with oxidized beer unless there is an issue with their process.

i am sure you can find an online supplier who can get caps to your front door quickly.  the brew will not suffer from staying in the fermenter a little longer.  just take care to store your fermenter well : at this stage you can keep it a little cooler, but continue to keep it out of sunlight.

Get the right caps.... Your beer already has a safe home.... couple of days more won't hurt... TheJet
