What do y'all think....?
Not to be a downer, but playing devil's advocate, the only issues I see with this setup is temp control and portability. If you can hang it in a spot that is perfect, or a spot that is exactly the right temp all the time great, but if you have to have 2 different ferm temps, say for a kolsch and a belgian at the same period it may get tricky.
Check this out, http://morebeer.com/view_product/16662/102269/Fermentap I have been meaning to get one, may be a less expensive alternative to play with the conical idea before a huge cash outlay.
Either way keep us posted!
Thirsty - (and this is just for the sake of an interesting argument.. you know I love you!)
I thought of the portability issue, but I don't really haul my fermenters around much after I fill them up. Think about it, the only reason you haul them into the kitchen is to rack or bottle... I do my dryhopping right were they sit becuse I don't like to disturb them. If they work like their theory says they do, these things seem to eliminate most of the need to haul them around during the process. .
And as far as temp control, I usually ferment three or four things at a time, and I currently keep all of those things in the linen closet (LOL sad, huh?) (The only obvious exception to that is lagering which is done in my garage fridge anyway.) That closet stays fairly stable as far as temp (runs 65 to 73 degrees in there year round) so if I am brewing up something that needs a warmer temp than my other stuff, I just put a heating belt and a towel over that one and stick a sheet of styrofoam between the warmer one and the cooler one. No reason I couldnt do something similar if I went with a lot of these.
Not to say you don't bring up some excellent points tho. The mobility issue concerns me a great deal as far as the very beginning. Like I said earlier, I'm not graced with a great deal of upper body strength. Even though I can horse around 50 lbs of filled fermenter easily enough, my plastic buckets have handles and these things dont. There doesnt seem to be a real good place to get a grip on them and I am worried that they might slip out of my arms. I think I came up with an idea for a wheeled rack that would cost me probably 10 bucks or so to make if I did need to wheel them around.
I dont think I am going to go whole hog on these things right off the bat. But I do think I will buy one and see if I like it. The concept of absolutely NO oxygen introduction during the fermenting/racking process intrigues me. If it's too much of a pain with beer, I can just make mead in it rather than tying up one of my fermenters for months on end LOL.
