2008 BKB Spring Brew - Kolsch - Brewing thread

DC, the cap was loose.

Only thing extra I did was put the carboy outside overnight (33 degrees) and racked to the bottling bucket when it warme enough to clear.  Kind of like a mini cold crash.  I used twice the amount of Kolsch yeast as well.  I wanted to go with more of a "commercial" pitching rate than a "homebrewers".

Any input on mine???

I loved yours man. It was real suprising the difference in taste after drinking the kolsch I made. I like yours a lot better. The yeast must have made all the difference. the ingredients weren't much different and the hops were minimal in the recipe. You did an excellent job.

Brewski. I got yours today. Very good. Similar sweetness like Newbies. Yours is a lot hoppier though. But I like hoppy. Very good. I'm gonna like drinking em up.
The carbonation level was ok. Not flat. Small head but lots of bubbles.

When you primed it did you let it sit at room temp before cold crashing it?
It might just be taking longer due to cold temp. The one I am drinking as I type is plenty carbed.

Did you add more hops than the recipe asked for? Different kind of hops?

UPDATE:

Just opened 2nd bottle. Much better carbonation. I also noticed that first bottle I opened didn't have much sediment on bottom but 2nd one did. So most likely cause of the flat beers is uneven distribution of the priming sugar. 2nd bottle tastes every bit as good as the first.

I think we should do a community brew and swap on a weekly basis big_smile

Brewski, YOU ROCK!

My wife opened the box and put beer in fridge while I was as work. I saw 3 bottles and assumed they were all kolsch. I opened the 3rd bottle and thought it was a stout. It tastes awesome. Smokey, roasted flavor but not overpowering. perfect balance. I love stouts and dark beers but not too much roasted flavor but this stuff is perfect. Thanks for the recipes.

Here's the recipe I did for the kolsch:

8 oz German light Munich
8 oz German pale Wheat
4 lbs Alexander Pale LME ( 5 lbs dme)
2 lbs light DME
1/8th pd cane sugar (1/4 pd sugar)

1 oz halleteru 60
1 oz EKG 30

Muntons Premium dry yeast

OG: 1.049
TG: 1.009
SRM: 5.72
IBU: 25.1
Alch: 5.2

Yeah, but I just finished one of B-Newski's, & it blows mine away.  Lighter, better carb.  Haven't tried yours yet, tomorrow.
The Bush Monkey, well that just kinda happened.  My kids say it's one of my best ever.  And, WTF, I gotta do that one again.  In fact, maybe tomorrow.   I got the stuff.

Seeing as there has been no other swap list offered, I see no reason to not use the page 11 list.  As for what date to ship, each group will have to coordinate between themselves to figure out the best date to ship.  Here is the list...

Quad, DC, Brewski, Brewskinewbski
KyNGmedic, Rooster, Bull, Skervy
Brewluva, Thirsty, Ricka182, Brewchez

We already have an exchange between Deafcone and Brewskinewbski.  Has anyone else already exchanged?

I will PM the group I am in to setup shipping dates and the like....

edit:  Ok, so just realized I can't pm the whole group.......

OK, i just tapped the keg today, looks like i have Thirsty, Ricka182 and Brewchez on my shiplist, if you guys still have Kolsh to swap send me a PM with your address

I got mine bottled up this weekend.  Surprisingly it isn't as painfully dark as I thought it was going to be with the 10LB Carapils that I got from my backasswards LHBS.  And it tasted pretty good.

It should be ready in another week or two.

Ok little confused, weren't we going to do a personal swap at 1n3m3g's on the 10th? I mean I would love to share w/ as many as I can, but I put 4 bottles aside to swap, if we do have to ship, I can't see sending out to multiple people (expensive). Besides that my keg is almost ready to kick.
