2008 BKB Spring Brew - Kolsch - Brewing thread

brewchez wrote:

I tasted Brewluva's Kolsch and a bonus IPA last night.

the kolsch was fantastic.  Great softness in the mouthfeel.   There was a great breadiness and grainy flavor that carried over very well from the aroma and the flavor.  This is the true heart of a good Kolsch.
It pushes the limit on its color, being a little darker than expected, but it had near brilliant clarity with a good satin like head to it.

The IPA was also a very great drinkable beer.  A good caramel malt character came through in the flavor with a nice grapefruit finish in as it warmed a bit.  Overall a great drinking beer.

Brewluva, mine will be in the mail this week/weekend.

WOW!, thanks, cant wait to have some others to compare it to.

Rooster, got your package and cracked one open last night. Good color, great aroma and the taste was fantastic.I liked the Spalt. Good call! I could drink these all day long. When it got to me of course it was a little cloudy due to the shipping but once it sat a few hours and settled it was crystal clear. The carbonation level was just right and the beer poured with a good three inches of foam . Congrats man and thanks!

Quad, got your beer today. It's in the fridge and will be drank TONIGHT! WOOOHOOOO!!!!
This is the first community brew and swap I have participated in. I think it's a great way to compare others brews to yours. From what I've had so far I would say mine was subpar to the others but I don't mind that. Every one that I know that has had it liked it but I wanted to compare it to experienced brewers to see whrre I stand. Obviously I need to work on my brewing but it's fun to compare to others and see what kind of differences there are in the same recipe.
I'll be getitng a turkey fryer by the end of summer. I am going through bankruptcy right now so money is tight. Should be squared away by end of summer depending on how tough the trustee is.

Quad. 2nd bottle is half gone. Loved the Kolsch man. Good balance. Wife really oved and and in fact it will be my next brew even before the summer community brew we are working on. And I wil lbe using a kolsch yeast this time too. Excellent job Quad.

Ordered ingredients to make the kolsch again, this time with kolsch yeast. Might be a regular brew for me.

Brewluva, yours are on the way!  I sent them via FedEx, and they should be there Tuesday.  I didn't want to pay the extra $15 to get the there over the weekend.  There are six brews in the box.  The Kolsch, an IPA-ish beer, and a Honey Porter...I think two of each....

Awesome!  I'm glad you both liked it.  I've given quite a bit of the Kolsch away to friends and they have all liked it as well so it looks like quite the successful brew.  I think the Kolsch yeast makes a huge difference on this style.  Rooster, my roommate, brewed his without a Kolsch yeast, and while it still tasted great, it was quite different from mine.

I just got your brew in the mail yesterday but haven't opened any yet.   I will be trying out yours and Brewski's Kolsch he sent either tonight or over the weekend.  I can't wait to try them out!

FYI, I keep forgetting but I wanted to post my recipe, so I'll try to do that tonight when I get home so you can see what I used.

And here is the recipe:

6# Muntons Extra Light DME
1/2#. German Light Munich malt
1/4# German Wheat malt

1.5 oz. Hallertauer Tradition 5.7 aa 06 crop 60mins
.5 oz. Hallertauer Tradition 5.7 aa 06 crop  45mins

White Labs Kolsch yeast

OG:             1.044
Terminal Grav:  1.007

Brewski, sitting here having one of your Kolsches and I am quite impressed.  I think it is pretty similar to mine although I think the bitterness comes through much better in yours and the aftertaste is just oplain better in your version.  Overall it's a bit dark for the style I think but so it mine, but even so, the taste is great.  Excellent brew!

Bull, I'm about half way finished the first of your beers right now, the second wont last long as this is an excellent brew.  I would love to know what type of hops you used, they taste great.  Your beer has good balance, and really goes down smooth. Great beer!!
