Well I'm out of this one.  There's no way I can ferment and secondary a cali common cool enough now.  I have no real means of temp control.  I've got a small house without a lot of room.  I've been trying to talk the wife into letting me get some kinda of a chest freezer or 2nd fridge, but but she says "no" because really we don't have the room for it.

I guess we'll see what the summer community brew brings.

I am with you.

BOOOO to all the elitist temp controlling brewers out there!!!!
BOOOOO!!!

I voted American Brown.

Cal Common sounds good.  I haven't brewed one in about four years when I didn't have ferm temp control.  I've been meaning to get to this for awhile anyway.  I already have the stuff to do the black ipa, so I guess I can do both now!

Isn't there a yeast out there, like Cry Havoc, whereby you could get lager-like results at a higher temp?

Wyeast 2112 California Lager can be fermented up to 68.  However I probably wouldnt ferment it at that.  Lack of proper lager temps is one of the leading inspirations behind this style in the first place.

If the temperature control is going to be an issue for we people we can brew something else.  This is supposed to be a community brew so I'd like the beer to be brewable by everyone.  I've never used the 2112 yeast and when the temp range said up to 68F I figured it could be fermented at normal ale temps.  FYI, if I didn't pick steam I would have picked American Brown.

FWIW if the American brown prevails, I have a flat out killer recipe, I have a keg on tap, and just brewed 12 gallons on saturday.

Jus sayin

Is it Moose Droolish?

I voted Black IPA, but would be willing to do anything with Ale yeast.

Never had moosedrool, but it is a tweaked out DFH Indian brown, I keep trying to make a lower gravity version, but my efficiency last 2 times was through the roof, so I come it at about .065-.070 ish. I will post it later in the recipes section once I eat dinner.

I'll switch to an American Brown.  One of my fav's.

why not pick two beers and let the members brew one of the two or both? that way those who don't have the temp control can still participate.

I think that it's a branch of the British Government, as described in detail by Monty Python.

American Black IPA and Belgian Black IPA were the next two on the list, but I am bound to listen anytime Thirsty says something like

And it looks like most of the rest of the group is headed in that direction as well.  It only took us like two weeks to get here and boom, here we are headed in a different direction.  I love it!
