air lock..
Hi I have just started my first fermentation process. My question: as to the air lock...how tight is the top pushed in ? or does it just rest on the lock? ihave half filled it with water...So far no sign of bubbling? it has been 24 hours...it is a warm day and the temp 30 degrees.
Yea, you need to make sure the airlock is pushed in (enough so the bottom clears the underside of the lid) and has a nice tight seal. If you are using a primary bucket, you should have a rubber grommet in the lid that the airlock goes into. This creates a nice tight fit, forcing the CO2 out of the airlock.

"it has been 24 hours...it is a warm day and the temp 30 degrees."
Keppel, do you really mean 30 degrees? If so, I think you'll be waiting quite awhile for the bubbling to begin. Are you brewing a lager? If not, and you're using ale yeast, I don't think you'll ever get activity to start if it's really at 30F...
As for 24 hours, don't get nervous...I've had to wait up to 3 days before...(but in fairness I didn't use a starter on that one)
cheers
Well I figured he was probably using Celsius, as outside of the US, that's what most countries use. If he was, then his temps would be around 86 degrees Fahrenheit. While that temperature is a little warm, it might not be that warm inside.

If it is just a conversion thing, then he'll be fine in the next 12 hours....sounds like no starter used and hopefully for him an ale yeast.
Damned metric system....
