air in siphon line concern
I'm new; only 2 batches under my belt. So far everything has gone well but I do have a concern which I haven't been able to any discussion on. Sometimes, when siphoning, a pocket of air will get stuck at the high point in the line. As the beer passes this point, there is a lot of bubbling and all. Will this aerate the beer too much and cause off flavors? This only seems to happen when I use an autosiphon.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
This happens to me all the time. I wouldn't worry about it as it has never caused any problems for me. There is just so little oxygen in that place that I wouldn't actually think it can have any effect.
I also have the same problem. You're only going to run into off-flavors if you have a very sensitive palate, or if you blowing oxygen into the brew.
I wouldn't worry about it. Try to reduce the oxygen in the siphon line as much as possible, but I don't think you are going to be able to tell the difference.
Not sure if you all do this or not, but one little trick that I have found with the auto siphon is to pump it. I was just taking it and pulling up once and pushing it back down to start the flow. But once I tried pumping it in shorter strokes (insert joke here) and found that I would get less air bubbles left in the line, then just let the natural flow go from there. If it is in the tube or where the tube and the cane meet then you can try squeezing the tube and that will usually help the air bubble to pass.
cheers
I get this a lot without an auto siphon. Other than it causing it to rack slower I don't think it'll hurt much. I just flick the tube above the air pocket and it usually passes through fairly easy.
