Airlock

Hey all back for my 3rd brew ever, havin trouble fully comprehending the airlock. I have a dark residue that protruded from my fermenter into my airlock, is this bad, how can I solve this from happening? Do I need a blow off tube to ensure it won't happen? I am still fermenting in plastic, would it be more plausible to start fermenting in a carboy? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated due to my lack there of experience. So you all know brewed with a coopers kit (wheat beer)

Stuff coming up into the airlock is largely just because the fermenter isn't big enough to accommodate the expanding krausen/foam from the fermenting beer.  If you only have a 5.5gal bucket or a 5 gallon carboy then you can use a blow off tube as you mentioned.  Use the blowoff tube until fermentation settles down (after 4-5 days) and replace with an airlock.  In the meantime, you need to clean out the current airlock.   I'd make a little bowl of sanitizer and have it ready.  Wipe down any stuff that may be sitting on top of the lid from the spewing airlock first, preferably a paper towel soaked with some sanitizer.  The pull the airlock off, clean it out under warm water, dip it in the sanitizer to sanitize it, then put it back on with some water in it.

At least that's what I'd do.
