All-Grain or Extract?

Does Dave get to keep the beer?

I went to all-grain only a couple of batchs ago.  I started with partial mashes thinking there would be a pretty steep learning curve, but I actually had better than expected efficiency with the partials so I leaped into all-grain.  The little extra work and effort are well worth it and tons of fun.

Time is the biggest factor for me.  Time to put into each brew and time to learn new things.  I think I'll go for it as soon as a have a lull at work.

i watched a video in one of the other forums and i't looked like it took quite a bit of time to finish. how long does it typically take to to an all grain batch. not including fermentation and the kegging/bottling. just the time put into the brewing period.

I start heating the water for my heat exchanger at 10-11 am and usually don't finish until 4-5 in the afternoon.

Hm, I can usually do an extract batch in 3 hours (includes sanitzing, brewing, chilling, pitching, and sanitizing everything again).  When doing all grain I'm usually done in about 4-5 hours, but I usually just rinse stuff and come back and sanitize later.  These times are based on good brewing days, as I'm sure anyone who has had a problem while brewing can attest, ha.

My Partial mashes usually took me about 4 hours, and all-grain has taken me on average 5.  I can't decide if I want to brew a wee heavy next yet.  But the recipe calls for a two hour boil. big_smile

I had a nightmare/stuck-mash brew session once that went over 10 hours.

That sounds awful.  If that had happened to me, I would currently be listing all of my brewing equipment for sale right now.

I'm thankful it's only happened once, a few modifications were made to the system the next day.
