All-Grain or Extract?
How many of you are brewing extract? Any big reasons why you haven't jumped to all-grain? Time, equipment, etc?
I have been doing all grain exclusively for about a year now. But, my wife requested that my next brew "Use the syrup stuff like you used to," so I will be doing a few extracts here and there as well. I do admit that the extract does take a lot less time.
Any particular reason your wife requested an extract brew?
I was thinking the same thing. My wife is pretty accustomed to me being gone all-day on brew day.
We have a 4 month old. My wife stays at home, and so during the weekend, she likes me to help out with the baby so she can have a bit of a break. My last brewing session lasted from about noon until about 6:00 or so. She wasn't terribly happy with that.
What do you brew Brewbie?
I'm doing extract, but i'm interested in all grain, will slowly buy what i need after i prob see it done and have some hands on assistance / exposure.
So for you is it a matter of learning from someone or if there were a high quality book/video of the equipment and process would that help you make the plunge? I'm working with some people in developing a process based manual/DVD for all-grain brewing specifically. There are some floating around already but this will take a little different angle.
yes i'm more of a hands on person than reading, so watching and physically seeing and doing is more helpfull, also seeing and learning what equipment i may need and how to clean and operate it etc, videos may be helpful. the money / upgrade investment in equipment keeps me from making the plunge, but i feel i'll get there. plus physically doing it with someone will allow me to see if the the extra effort and work and time of doing all-grain is worth it
I just made my jump into partial-mash brewing, and while a few mistakes were made, it was a lot of fun ![]()
I will still continue to do extract brewing, as it is fairly time-efficient & has so far yielded good results! I will also continue to move on into more partial-mash and all-grain brewing, but there are just times when it isn't very time-efficient ![]()
Also, I am not 100% confident in the processes yet, so I always do the batches with my buddy Dave - that way I have someone to blame the mistakes on ![]()
