Austin Homebrew

Anyone ever order any of their AG recipe kits?  I just ordered their Anniversary Hefe. http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_i … 7460e9f2a4 and White labs hefe IV 380.  I've never ordered from AHB before, and they don't list the recipe.  just wondering what people have thought of the kits they've done from there.

Their kits are horrible dude!  And its well known all over the web that the anniversary heft is the worst of the worst.

Just kidding!  Let US know if the kits are any goo after you brew up the beer.

there was no reviews for that kit, and no ingredients listed, so I'm kind of jumping in blind.  I was going to order Hank's Hefe from Midwest, and a pomegranate zinfandel island mist kit, but MW was out of the wine kits.  So I ordered from AHB and just hoped the hefe would be good.

I've made 1 or 2 AG kits from them and a bunch of Extract. They always come out really good.
I don't think the anniversary kits have reviews yet because they are all newer, let us know how it comes out.

if you're doing extract, the anniversary kits are a good price.  $20 for an extract kit isn't bad.  And if you were to stock up with a few kits and spend $100, shipping is free.

It is good to hear that someone has had good results from their recipe kits, I'll let you all know how my anniversary heffe comes out.

just got the stuff I ordered today. the kit has 6 lb german pilsner malt, 4 lb red wheat, 1 oz liberty hops at 4.1% alpha.  I'm using white labs hefe IV with it.  Sounds like a reasonably good beer should result.  Hope they don't get mad I posted the ingredients.

I don't think they care all that much.

yeah, if they cared that much they wouldn't list the ingredients on the instructions.  I will be making it Sunday, and it's my first wheat beer.  That's why I said "reasonably good" should be the result.  Hopefully all the horror stories of stuck sparges are overblown.....

geez, I'm worried about stuck sparges, and I can't even get the yeast starter done right.  Meant to  make it last night, but it slipped my mind.  so I go to do it today, and boiled up some water, added the dme, cooled and put it on the stir plate.  notice I didn't mention adding the liquid yeast, because I didn't do that.  after about an hour I remembered I hadn't done that, and put it in there.  Hopefully this isn't how my brew day goes tomorrow.

on the other hand, I did get my Island Mist Pomegranate Zinfandel in the fermenter ok.

Just don't drain your wort too fast if you don't have rice hulls.  The last wheat I brewed used half wheat/half 2 row and I lautered fine without using them.  Though it is a good idea to grab a couple pounds of rice hulls with your next order.  They're always nice to have around for insurance.  I usually have them on hand but forgot to restock before that brew day.

well, mashing and sparging went just fine.  no stuck sparges or anything.  Did end up low on gravity, but I have more than 5 gallons in the carboy.  gonna try and keep the ferment temp around 62.

just bottled this one, fg was 1.008, hydro sample tasted good, little bit of clove, no banana.  Will see in a week or 2 how it tastes carbed up, should be a great batch.

ok, got it in my tap a draft, and poured one.  Nice clean tasting brew.  Not much clove or spicyness though.  I think I may have fermented too low of temp.  or you really need to do an acid rest at 111 F to set the clove in, which I heard at another forum.  I didn't do the 111 rest, and fermented at about 60 F.  Maybe a couple degrees higher would have brought out more clove.
but the beer is good, and it will get drunk.  tasted pretty good as a nice refreshing cool down after getting home from work.
