Beer fermenting too warm?
I made my Chocolate Oatmeal Stout yesterday, and today all seems to be going really well, the yeast starter did it's trick and its REALLY fermenting and bubbling away.
Where I have my fermentor placed its 64ish F right now and varies to 73ish, I had the bucket wrapped in towels and a heating pad underneath. The bucket is pretty warm at the moment, much warmer then the surrounding air temp, I would guess around 75-80 possibly. Is having the bucket wrapped and using a heating pad overkill, and could the high temp mess up the fermentation?
Thanks
guy
You do't need the wrap and heat pad of the room temp is 65ish. The cooler temp will make for a better beer. Get some temperatur strips you can adhere to your fermentor. They're pretty accurate and only costs a couple bucks.
I've brewed stouts as high as 75 and it came out ok. so I wouldn't worry too much about it. you'll find out how it was affected when you taste it after it's carbonated. should be fine.

Where the ambient temp is already 64-73, a heating pad and blanket is too much. Your fermentation temps are going to be much higher than ideal. Fermentation is going to raise the temperature inside the bucket 5-10 degrees.
The Fermometer strips DC suggested are a great idea. I just picked up a few more at my LHBS this afternoon.

Ah thanks! Would one of the temperature strips that are used on fish tanks work?

If you can find ones that have a wide enough range. I've looked at a few at pet stores and Walmart and they were only mid 60's and higher.
