Blow Off Tube

I had not been using a blow off tube which usually resulted in a popped off lid and a bit of a mess for me to clean up along with me worrying something happened to the beer. No bad batches yet but I figured I should get a tube to stick into my airlock and down into a jug of water so I wouldn't have to worry.

My question is if I'll see less activity this way. I brewed Friday night, by Saturday I was getting a bubble just about every 2 seconds or less. By Sunday I wasn't getting anything. I stood there for a good bit, probably close to a minute. I'm worried that the change in temps do to the season change may have screwed it up thinking it was done fermenting or something because it was hotter Saturday then dropped down over Saturday night. So it probably started at about 71 then dropped down. This morning the thermostat said 65 before I bumped it up to 69. Should I just take a gravity reading and see how it's doing? My FG is usually 1.012 for this beer so if I'm not even close over 2 days of readings should I go get another yeast smack pack and pitch? Anyone want to send me a stir plate so I can start doing starters? smile I'm thinking I just need to check the gravity and then relax. I always stress out about my fermentation because I know I'm not pitching enough yeast since I don't do a starter and the og of this particular beer I do is like 1.070. Thanks for your help!

you can still do a starter with out a stirplate.  just need a big jug, a gallon wine jug works.  for 1.070 beers, you really should do a starter, or 2 packs of yeast, but starters would be cheaper.

as for the beer, take a gravity reading.  if it's not moving, stir the fermenter gently, to get the yeast back up into the wort, but not get oxygen into it.  then see if it starts working again.  if it still isn't doing anything, pitch more yeast.

Thanks Hogarthe! You rock, I'll do that.
