boilover
Had my first boilover today. Luckily, I was brewing outside, using my new turkey fryer. That thing gets the wort boiling way faster than the kitchen stove.
I just started with a propane burner last weekend as well and i almost had a boilover as well. I just happened to have my hand on the gas control when it started to go was able to shut it down and stop the boil. sure am glad to be out of the kitchen as well.

Yeah... boilover. All the time. I guess it's the dark side of the power of the propane. I normally prevent it by lifting the kettle off the burner right as the foam begins its hurried rise towards the rim of the pot. Either that or I'm inside when it happens, and I find out up to five minutes later when I go outside to find the gas on but the flame off.

Wow, that must be a sight to see! How long can you sustain a lift of 6.5 gal? Or are you not doing a full boil? I think I'd have a hard time lifting 12.5 gal right at the start of the boil...
Another good way to avoid the boil over is to have a garden hose handy with the spray nozzle set to a fine spray. Just give that foam a short blast or two and it will settle right down. Also, as Irondavy can attest to turning the propane down a bit will also help out. Usually, propane can be turned down dramatically after a boil is reached and will continue to boil. This is also a good way to save on propane during the full 60 min.
This usually always sparks some kind of debate or testimonies, but I always use foam control- Fermcap S.

I am able to jam 15 gallons of runoff into a keggle, (which only originally held 15.5 gallons) If I put any more in, it would spill out the weep holes at the top. As long as I do not forget and oversparge, I will not have a boilover. This is at a full roller with the hotbreak already formed, and you can see there is really no chance for uprising:
Great view of your keggle/kettle conversion in action Thirsty. You really are jamming it in there. I do a seven gal boil in my 15 gal keggle and still have boil overs way too often. Maybe it's time to start thinking fermcap.
Is that Taters in the background? Takes mashing in a totally different direction than I was thinking. By the way, the Budweiser keg cops are on the way... Think they will buy your story that it was just a crying shame to waste perfectly good stainless that way?

The first run at the name for the brewery was Tater and Lips brewery. One of my recent nicknames has been tater, and my buddy I brew with is nicknamed lips (he has huge Steven Tyler kind of lips- been his nickname for years now), since then it has morphed into Thirsty Lips Brewery, and now most recently Bear Hole Brewing Co. (Bear Hole is a neighborhood and wildlife area in our town.
