brewing competition

I know i'm pretty much a newbie at this but im very interested in the competition side, as long as its fun, plus i wouldnt mind getting the opinions from people other than my friends looking for free beer.

I'm a BJCP recognized judge. I took the class, and passed the test. it's a great way to learn a lot more about brewing, it can't help but make you a better brewer.  BJCP sanctioned competitions use a standard scoring form that gives you a good deal of feedback so you can pinpoint areas to improve your brewing. it's well worth $6 and two bottles of beer to get an impartial review of your product...

Hey danno, how does a person go about getting a class like that? Sounds like a pretty
intresting.

I'm sure this is something that the local brew club would know about, just asking.

I got the chance to try some corsendonk, Saturday night I have to say it was pretty da...
dang good.

The sad part is, I'm so knew to this I don't know the lingo to discribe the taste.

I was pretty impressed with it though.

Just got back from my clubs monthly meeting.  My Russian Imperial Stout took 2nd place.  Better than I thought it would do considering there were 17 other entries.  Got beat by an Old ale that had been aging for 14 months (supposedly).

Also took part in the judging of this competition, my first time.  My club offers a BJCP class that I'm looking into, but from what I've heard and Danno can probably back it up is that the class is a lot of fun and the test is actually pretty hard, so congrats Danno.

Most BJCP registered clubs will hold monthly meetings and do a monthly competition.  Sometimes they follow the BJCP schedule so they can submit the winner to the BJCP Club Only competition, others will sometimes just pick a random beer to send, it's really up to the club.  I've never seen an extract or grain classification, but the BJCP does do an extract only competition once a year.

I think entering is a good way to get proper feedback on your beers.  But to each their own.

you don't neccesarily have to take a class in order to take the test, my area is blessed with quite a few very experienced judges, and they've put together a curriculum that really prepares you quite well for the test itself.

the test is currently ten questions, in essay form, plus four tastings.  the questions range from brewing technique to styles, a vast array of stuff.  I didn't get a chance to study much for my exam, so I didn't do that well on the styles. but, I did well enough on brewing knowledge and on the tasting to pass. I've been doing some studying lately, as well as hosting and attending subsequent classes, and I'll be retaking the exam in December to improve my score.

your local club would be the best way to find out about a BJCP class, and if they don't have one, start one up!  each class that our area "runs" is taught by the participants. we run it about 12 weeks long, and break down each class into two sections, first, focusing on one particular area of brewing (water, hops, grain, yeast, mashing, recipe design, etc...) then focusing on a couple of beer styles. we taste commercial examples, and any homebrewed examples people bring in, and write scoresheets to prepare for testing, and down the road, judging...
