brewing competition
Over at the almost dad inlaws this morning and saw some of his ribbons he's won in competitions across the country.
I'm impressed.
Any of you kind folks ever compete or is it more just for the hobbie?
What are some of the catagories that can be competed in?
What place did ya take, and what flavor or style was it?
And how big is the even and what is it like to compete with some you made yourself?
How long did you brew before entering the comp. I've never competed in anything but sports, so this sounds pretty exciting to me.
Just curious.

Well if you would like to try competitions on a smaller scale, try and find a good homebrew club. The club I belong to has a competition every meeting (no entry fees!) and since they are registered with the AHA, any beer that wins the competition can be sent in to the AHA club only competitions.
I've only entered a few competitions and it was always the same beer. The second beer I ever made, Hop Dog IPA, won the clubs extract only competition and placed 3rd in another clubs competition. Sent it out for the national competition and it made it to the second round, exciting stuff.
This Sunday, the club is having their October meeting/competition, Dark Beers - anything over 20 SRM, so I'll be entering my Russian Imperial Stout. Should be pretty kick ass as it's been aging in the bottles for almost 8 months! It was good after the first month, but the longer I let it sit, the better it gets.
I like the competitions more so for the criticizm than the idea of winning. It's a lot easier to find out whats right/wrong with your beer from a certified beer judge than from a friend who is going to drink it no matter what you did to it, ha. Then again, getting swag never hurt.

If you want more info about styles and judging this is the place to go >> http://www.bjcp.org/index.php
Is there a place / Web site to go to that lists the when, where, and catagories for competition?
I've never entered a competition but, from what I understand the beers are entered into one of the styles and they based on how well they fit the style.
would they further break down the categories by all-grain or extract?
I don't think so, but someone with more info could tell you for sure.
The bjcp website listed above includes a full calendar of events as well as a break down of the style guidelines.
They do ask for the ingredients of the beer when you enter, but this is not to break down the competition into all grain or extract. All beers of a style are judged against each other whether they are all grain or include extract.
This is of course for the BJCP or similar events. Local clubs or other organizations may have separate competitions for all grain and extract.
I'm a long way from competing, if I ever do.
Yesterday I met the nice press. of the local brewing club, they have a small comp.
each month.
Really looking forward to going to the meettings.
