Brewing courses

I'm sure a friend of mine once said that he went on a brewing course at a pub. I'm pretty sure that it was one of the "Firkin" pubs, (that started with the Fox and Firkin in London).

Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Or do you know of any other pub/brewery-based brewing courses?

We have a place near us that offers all the equipment for home brewing.  You can come into the store, purchase the ingredients, then start your own brew.  This way you can brew your first beer without buying the equipment and learn under some supervision.

My friends and I might do this as we are new to home brewing and I am not too excited about buying a few hundred dollars of equipment...

Yes - it is quite easy to learn how to do home brewing. We taught ourselves from books. And a lot of shops that sell the equipment are very good with the advice too.

When you go to the shop and brew your own, who does the clean up.  What all are you missing out in the brew experience by doing it at their shoppe?

For what they charge, I'd let them clean-up.  Basically you're renting equipment, pretty handy if you live in a small apartment or just can't gather up equipment yourself.

I think BOP's (Brew on Premise) are good for those people who are unsure about brewing and want to give it a whirl but just need someone there to kind of hold there had during the process. It is probably a really good idea for homebrew shops. I'd imagine they get a lot people started in brewing. And hell, let them clean it up. I would do anything to have someone clean up after me during a brew day.

The LBHS in the area offers a brewing course for $20.  If you take the course and decide you want to purchase equipment, he deducts the $20 from your kit purchase.  I would think that other LBHS offer the same kind of deal.

That sounds like an awesome idea.  I wish my local homebrew shop would do that.  I'd take it just for fun.

Yeah, it seems like it works pretty well.  He usually runs the class on the first Saturday of the month, and he does it from his store.  I am pretty sure it isn't supposed to do it, but I have gone into the store during the class and they are usually all drinking his homebrew.  It seems like a lot of fun.

My LHBS guy is always handing out pints and glasses of wine while people are shopping, gotta be something wrong with that.
