brewing smaller batches
i was just wondering if anyone brews either gallon batches, or 2.5 gallon batches, or i guess anything smaller than a 5 gallon batch? If so how do you adjust the ingredients? Do you just cut everything in half, or is there a certain fraction you use? I'd like to try brewing some smaller batches so i can do a little more experimenting. thanks for any input.

I go to beer tools, and make a recipe for the beer I want. I make it for 5 gallons, then add it to the library, then look it up and at that point you can adjust the batch size, just type in the size you want and it does it automatically. I've brewed many 3 gallon batched that way.
You could look for a recipe there and if you find one you like just do the same, adjust the batch size and it will adjust it for you.

I've made 2 gallon batches by dividing by 2.5. Works out okay, and I usually do them for things I am experimenting with.
If I am playing I go with the following ROUGH measurements
1.5 lbs malt extract
grains to equal .5 lb
.8 oz hops (60 min)
.4 oz hops (10 min)
.4 oz hops (5 min)
2 T yeast (I tend to store mine from batch to batch)
Brewtools is a great site but it annoys me because I can't just give it a list of what I want to use to see what I get, I have to choose what style I am trying to make when I don't KNOW what I am making!!
Willard, you're exactly right. Just cut all your ingredients in half for 2.5 gal or in a fifth if you do a 1 gal batch. Nothing scientific about it.
As an all grain brewer I have been known to mash a 5 gallons batch worth of base beer, then make to 2.5 gallon batches steeping specialty grains in that wort pre-boil.
Works pretty good.
thanks to all who replied and helped me out. i look forward to some smaller experimental brews that may lead to full batches of something wonderful. once again i appreciate the replies. Cheers to all
