contamination
Ok got another question for you. I am fermenting in a plastic ale pale. I used a blow off tube and this morning I was going to replace the blow off (it's been a week) with a 3 piece airlock. As I was pushing the airlock into place I accidentally pushed the rubber gromet through and into the pale I sanitized all my equipment and transfered the beer into a new pale (minus the stupid gromet). Am I going to have any problems with this beer?
Cheers,
Blaine
As long as everything that touched your beer was clean and sanatized you should be fine. This of course includes the new pale you put the beer into.
everything was clean an sanitized except for the gromet that fell in. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I think I see now. If you didn't replace the gromit what is keeping an air tight seal? The bucket lid was sanitized the week before right? Hopefully since your primary fermentation is already done and the sugars have been eaten up any foreign stuffs won't affect it. You'll just have to wait and see but I think you'll be ok.
That happens to everyone eventually. As the beer has been fermenting already for a week it will probably be fine. There may be some small lever of contamination, but as long as you don't try and keep the beer around for a year it will never be noticed. The alcohol and pH of the finished beer will help protect it. Not 100%, but close enough.
Yea, don't sweat it, I don't know why you even switched buckets, you have a better chance of introducing off flavors . Oxidation wise. The less you screw around with your beer the better. I would have just scrubbed and sanitized my arm and gotten the grommet, if you absolutely felt that you needed to get it.. I personally have been elbow deep in my beer once or twice. I don't use gromets anymore, I use a instant gasket maker called Ultra black. I just stick my blow off tube in the lid, and seal it with the ultra black on the outside of the lid. I don't even switch to the air lock, just keep the blow off tube on 2 weeks later keg or bottle, your golden.
Thanks everybody....Im keeping my fingers crossed. If anyone wants to answer more questions I have a new one everyday.
Here's a bucket lid and airlock tip for ya... Take the lid off the bucket then put the airlock and grommet on the lid then snap the bucket lid back on. Pushing the grommet through the lid seems to happen to everyone who ferments in buckets at one point or another.
live and learn....I usually use glass carboys but if the bucket ever makes another appearance you can be sure i wont make the same mistake.
