Just a guess, but finer particles increasing total surface area perhaps.
Either that or the Mentos reacts with the evil in the diet coke and results in a massive exodus of CO2...

I don't understand the question. The artificial sugar (aspartame) in diet coke is not the source of nucleation. The mentos microscopically rough surface is the nucleation point.
A good scratch in a glass serves as a nucleation site. Small traces of dirt in your glass acts as nucleation sites.

Guess I was wondering what properties of the aspartame and the mentos caused the reaction, but according to
