Dry hopping with pellets leads to crud at top
Hi, I just attempted my first dry hopping. I have a barley wine in a secondary (glass carboy). I dropped in 3 oz of hop pellets and ignored my secondary for a week. Then after that week, I glanced at it and noticed that there is an inch layer of crud at the top of the beer. Hmm. I didn't expect that. Did the hop pellets just expand at the surface and stay there? Is that typical? I would have thought that they'd fall to the bottom. What do I do when I go to bottle? I've got crud on the bottom and top. Thanks for the help.

It's normal. Give the carboy a gentle swirl and they'll start to drop out of suspension. Don't worry if they don't all fall; just racking from below the hop sludge and you'll be fine.
I use an auto syphon to do my racking. One thing I found that helps to keep hop sluge in the carboy and out of my bottling bucket is to use one of those nylon hop bags as a hop filter. I stick my auto syphon into one of those bags before starting the syphon & the bag acts like a filter leaving most of the hops behind.
FPB is right, just give it a little swirl every couple of days and they will settle to the bottom. Also if you cold crash it will all sink to the bottom.
