Efficiencies
Does anyone calculate efficiency on brewday, I'm interested in how different systems perform for mashing. I can get in the low to mid 80's on a good day, and I've dropped as low as 65 or so when something was out of whack.
I calculate mine. I get about 75% to the low 80's. I batch sparge, though, so my efficiencies are a bit lower than others may see.
For a homebrewer 80ish is about maxed out I think.
I've seen/heard of a few people who consistently get close to 85% or so. A few rare reports of someone getting 90%, but I pretty much doubt these are true. My best day put me right at 81%, I believe. I am usually in the mid to upper 70's, which is fine for me.
90 is most likely someone who isn't calculating correctly.
Yup, but in my experience, it is easier to let them beleive the 90% than to try to convince them they may have miscalculated. This is one of the areas in which brewers can get really hung up and really defensive, so I usually just let it go.
On my all-grain batches I've had 65,67, and 74. With my partial mashs I think I calculated about 55 on average. I figured that was pretty good for the set-up that I had going.
How does the calc work if you're partial mashing?
I don't have my notes right here with me, but I think I figured how much the extract should contribute and then subtracted that from what I ended up with and compared that to 100% efficiency for the amount of grains I mashed.
Gotcha, good idea.
