Electric stove cooking
Whats up everybody? Im looking for a few suggestions. I brew my beer on an electric stove, Im hoping to get a propane cooker for Christmas, and my malt keeps burning and crystalizing on the bottom of the pot. Ive heard of using trivets but all the ones I see look like they would give the same result. Is there anything I could use from my home? An old bent coat hanger or something? The purpose is to get the pot away from the electric coil and having less area of contact on the bottom of the pot I assume. Any hints, tips, or tricks would be greatly appreciated! Thanx!
I brewed on an electric stovetop before I started brewing outside and I've never had a problem with scorched wort. When you're adding your extract are you keeping the pot on the burner? If so, next time pull the pot off the burner, add your extract, stir until dissolved and then place the pot back on the burner.
I think LME has a tendancy to crystalize on the bottom of pot than DME does. I use mostly DME and if I use LME I add it to water before heating the water up and stir often as it heats up yo dissolve anything on the bottom. If I use LME and DME I add the LME with 15 minutes left in boil and take pot off burner to do it and make sure it's stirred well before placing back on burner. I have had black pieces of extract float to top but only when using LME never with DME. I also add DME before water gets hot.

I currently use an electric stove. Did 5 batches of extract before switching to AG. Never had an issue with burning/scortching. I wouldn't move the pot as I mainly did full boils. For LME I'd warm it up by placing it on top a space heater for 30 minutes (but be intelligent about that). I'd stir the water real good and keep stirring while pouring the DME/LME. Continue stirring until it's disolved. You're arm will probably get really tired.
use more water for the initial boil. I think most extract recipes call for 2 gallons of water, up it to 3 or 4 gallons, and pull the pot off the burner to add malt, and you should be ok.
