First AG Post Mortem

Thanks for the info. I think I can still make the zapap work if I'm doing a smaller grain bill. I'll be trying that next month. For my next brew day, this weekend, I'm continuing on my quest for the ultimate cheap mash tun. I scrounged an ancient plastic cooler out of the basement, I have no idea where it came from. There's no tap in it so I was going to drill a hole but then I read in Palmer's book that instead of connecting a manifold to the tap hole you can just run a siphon hose over the side and siphon out the wort. I got Home Depot to give me a toilet water supply hose that had been returned with a defective connector for free, and took the braid off that for the manifold. So the entire cost of the cooler conversion will be the price of a hose clamp (25 cents?).

Probably be another disaster, but wtf.

I'd be wary of using your water heater idea. My father in law always told me never to drink any hot water from the tap. It sits hot in the heater with years' worth of accumulated mineral deposits and whatnot. Fine for bathing and washing dishes but not to drink. Just a thought.

I am going to take thirsty's advice and do all the strike and sparge water on the stove, only using the propane burner for the boil. That should save some gas.

And BTW, if anyone's interested, the stout turned out amazing. Much lighter than I would have expected a stout to be, but really yummy. So I'm a happy clam.
