First Bottling!
Well all I did my first batch and it is finally ready to drink! I WAS SO EXCITED! (duh) thus far the beer had a some what light body, a little bitterness, SMOOTH finish great foam... downside; I left too much room in the neck and caused a little over carbination so when I opened it there was a flood of FIZZIES
. any tips on when to tell exactaly to stop filling? I try to aim for about 1 inch from the top down for the air space. Other than that it was amazing! I am so happy. Since I forgot to tell you the kind of beer it was lol, here it is; Java Stout. yes JAVA coffee is the secret ingrediant. I will post the recipe later today.

I fill to about an inch from the top when I'm using 341 ml long neck bottles. I don't have many stubbies, but the shape of those would require a different measurement.
Best of luck with the first batch and the next.
same here I don't have any stubs/I use long necks. I think I needed to put a little more in some of the bottles.
I don't think leaving a little extra room in the neck will cause excess carbonation. You probably either added to much priming sugar or your brew wasn't done fermenting. From the recipe post you made, I'm going to guess it wasn't done fermenting, since it was bottled at 1.030.
When I fill bottles I usually put the cane into the bottle and let it fill to just below the round lip. When you pull the cane out you end up with a nice 1" space up top.

I suspect the gushing/fizzing might be due to incomplete fermentation, not the bottle fill level. That has happened to me.
If the top is left vacant it leads to fzzing. I had lots of time that problem
if it bothers you, make the beers ice cold before you open them. It helps somewhat.
checking out my IPA I've notice that the more room you have at the top of the bottle, it seems they carbonate faster.
