First Time with Whole Leaf Hops

Went to dry-hop my ESB with some whole leaf East Kent Goldings, and when I opened the packages of whole leaf hops, they were dried out and flaky (not green, more of a tannish yellow).  Unfortunately, they were practically all the way in the fermenter before I realized they weren't green and fresh (2 oz), but dried out and flaky.  I smelled what was left, and it didn't smell skunky or cheesy, but just like dried out or older East Kent Goldings that aren't quite as fragrant as usual.  Should I fish them out of the fermenter?  Is my ESB toast?  Needless to say, will probably be sticking with pellets for dry-hopping in the future.  I smelled what was left several times, trying to detect anything resembling cheesy and skunky, but it wasn't there.

Nevermind, fished them out.  One second inspection, they were cheese city.  Ugh.

that sucks. What was the source? Should really only buy whole leaf if they are in a nitrogen sealed foil air removed, which most reputable HBSs carry. They will always be dried and and flaky, or more dehydrated actually, but color should still be mostly green. A bit of yellow and brown can happen and isnt the end of the world, but cheesy=bad
