Glass or plastic your thoughts
I made the switch to all glass some time ago and even thinking about getting rid of my plastic bottling bucket for either a blichman beer gun or one of those better beer bottles. I do have an eight gallon plastic bucket that I do large batches of mead in on occasion but trying to get rid of that as well, just need to find an eight gallon carboy. Conicals are on the horizon so maybe I'll just get the 14 gallon ones and solve that problem too.
I have two glass 6.5 gallons carboys that I only use when my buckets are all full... I hate carboys. Difficult to carry, difficult to clean. never had a problem with the buckets. The only time I could see a real difference would be during secondary.
You know me.....I'm a Better Bottle Advocate ![]()
Everyone says carboys are harder to clean but I completely disagree. With buckets you have to be careful what you wash them with so as not to scratch them. You have to make sure not to soak them with solution too long or else run the risk of ruining your bucket. I throw the correct amount of PBW in the bottom of the carboy, hook my bottle washer up to the faucet and the racking cane to that and fill it with hot water. Several hours later or even the next day I drain and rinse and my carboy is clean guaranteed every time with no scrubbing. No elbow grease at all, what could be easier?
I use the same buckets that I started with 6 years ago. I have 2 5-gallon carboys for long secondaries and meads.
Got my 6gal. plastic fermenters/bottling buckets in the early 90s. Using the same ones today.
I like the 5gal glass carboys for secondaries, cause you can see the color of the brew & you fill them right to the top.
I have been using the same buckets for almost ten years. There is a bit of a smell in each bucket, but it smells like beer.
My most recent Cream Ale was very clean in aroma, it certainly didn't smell like years of Oatmeal Stout.
Does anyone really have smell carryover issues? Maybe my sense of smell is weak and I can't tell with my equipment.
Plastic buckets for primaries and glass carboys for secondaries. I clean them with bleach and have not had any issues as of yet.
I use plastic buckets for Primary and Secondary. I have one glass carboy, but the neck has stress fractures, so I've been staying away, at least until I can get a carrier for it. I have no smell issues in the plastic. I use just hot water and a tiny drop of dish detergent to wash them out, and one step sanitizer to rinse them.
When I asked as my local shop, the guy said the only problem with the plastic buckets was that small scratches in them could harbor bacteria. I'll admit, too, that I like to see how the fermentation is going, so I got a 6.5 gallon carboy. But all that aside, I think the lighter weight, lower cost and mobility of the bucket may make up for some of the glass advantages. I plan to get a plastic bucket with spigot to try out fermentation in it and use of for bottling ease.
