growing hops

some one gave me a hops plant,  want to know how to harvest it when to harvest it and how long can it be stored after it's picked,  probably won't have to worry this year it is so small of a plant, but thinking of the future.   Any good gardeners out there with info to help me out.

I think that most people cut the bines down about 2' or so from the base to make it easier to pick the cones. Mine are fence "trained", so I can just pick the cones off the bines at ground level.

Usually you can harvest in late summer-early autumn. When the cones are ready to harvest they'll feel drier & papery & should have a little spring to 'em when squeezed . If you rub a cone in-between your hands to break it apart & take a whiff, the flower should have peaked in aroma. Also if you look you should notice the powdery yellow lupulin glands.

I'm not sure exactly how long they're good for after harvesting. If properly dried, vacuum sealed, & stored in the freezer, I've heard of guys still polishing off last year's harvest not long before collecting the current year's.
