Help BrewingKB.com

I need help from one of our trustworthy members.  There will be a little $$$ in it for whoever can help me out with this (emphasis on the little).

I need someone who has a digital video camera, is willing to record one of their brew sessions, and knows how to transfer their video to their computer (and also be able to send it to me).

If you can do this, please send me a private message...

all-grain or extract? from start to finish or just at needed steps? what about cleaning/sani and prep work? stove top or some burner set up? simple or complex style of beer? what format is the recording to be in mpg? bottle, kegging or just the brewing process only?

We can start with just the brewing process - this should be a broad overview of what is required to brew beer.  I am thinking right now that there will be two videos: the brew session and fermentation/bottling.

Brew Session
This can be extract or all-grain, depending on the preference of the person making the video.  The major steps should be included.

Fermentation
Show activity in the air lock, show taking a gravity reading, and show transferring to secondary (if desirable).  Finally, show an example of bottling.

I am thinking that whoever wants to do this (and we can have more than one person do it) can have their choice between an iPod Nano or $150.  Again, we can have more than one person do this - it will actually help in showing variations on how people brew.

As far as format is concerned, I'll take it in whatever digital format you can get it to me.  If that's mpg, that's fine, if its .mov, that's also fine.  I have access to enough digital video editing software that I should be able to manage it. smile

webby, what kind of time frame are you looking at?  I could volunteer for this, but I probably wouldn't be able to brew until next weekend or the week of Christmas.

I would like to have the videos sometime around the new year (at least the first part of the video - the brewing process). Do you think you could do that?

Im brewing this weekend, and have a digicam, but my system is so specialized I dont know if it would be that useful.

I think any video will be useful.  It may give someone an idea on how they can brew their beer better, or it may show them something that they hadn't thought about before...

should it be narrated as you go or will that be added by you when editted?

It should be narrated as you go...you guys are better at brewing than I. hmm

wonder how hard that would be to do live on webcam?
Yahoo has that avalable in IM.
hmmm.

Are you looking for a specific size of file when edited or is more better?  How about the resolution?  I'm planning on brewing after the weekend possibly on Tuesday.  I can edit the mpeg-2 down to whatever you want for size and content.  I can also burn it off to CD and mail it if you want all the source and edit it yourself.  I'll be brewing from an extract kit on the stove which is where I'm guessing most people start.  Cmanley, I'd love to see an all-grain batch stepped through.  I'm particularly interested in how you manage the sparge water flow rate with the run-off flow rate.

I'm particularly interested in how you manage the sparge water flow rate with the run-off flow rate.

Mine runs via a float switch, it keeps 2" of water above the grain bed during the sparge.  I try to sparge for 45 minutes so that's just guesstimation.  When the water level above the grain bed in my mashtun drops to below an inch it kicks on the pump that sends 170 degree water to the top and shuts off again when the level is 2".

Size and resolution are not too important, although I'd rather be working with a higher res and size since I can trim it down to whatever size necessary...

Just so people know, I can only offer the compensation to three people, so if you decide to do this, let me know as soon as possible.  I've already heard from one person who is going to do this...

Webby, I have the files on my HDD now.  They are the raw .MOD (mpeg2) files.  Let me know what format you want.  I can just zip the files together and ftp them someplace if you want or I can put them on a ftp site and give you the path to get them.  If you want them in another format to cut down on transfer time or make them easier to edit let me know.  I have done nothing to these files as far as editing.  I trust your judgment as far as editing them to your purposes.  I did both bottling and brewing from boiling water to pitching yeast.  If there is anything as far as audio on it you might want to cut it, it's probably really corny or inappropriate, hehehe.
