Homebrew competition recipe submission
Is it now normal, or required to submit a homebrew recipe and procedeure for an entry to homebrew comps?
I didn't have to a few years back, but now it seems as if the BJCP and/or AHA rules have changed. I looked for a few comps to submit some brews to, but they all seem to want my recipe, and steps for brewing the beer.
I must be the last of a dying breed, that believes a receipe belongs to the person who created it. I understand homebrewing is supposed to be a family or community...and I'm not saying my beers, or myself will be famous for brewing someday, but I take my time testing small batches to find what I like and what works for me. I just don't feel like giving up that information to everyone. It's my hard work, why should I give it away for free? I don't take other peoples recipes, even if they post them publically themselves.
To me, homebrewing is about creativity and work. If you want to to brew a certain style, master that style. Read on it, learn how to make one, make test batches, formulate your own work, etc, etc..
So can I get away with entering any comps, while keeping my work to myself? If not, I'll just save my entry fees for more beer supplies...
i stopped entering competitions a year ago. i jut make beer that I like tl drink and friends like to drink.

That is not a requirement for every comp. Some of the big ones do it, and the NHC does it. Many of the MCAB qualifiers do as well. If you contact the director, I am positive they will still allow you to submit the entry without the recipe.
On a personal level I know and understand your point. I however feel that if someone likes your recipe THAT much, let em try and brew it! 2 reasons. First, it will never come out the same because your brewing water will be unique, and your system tolerances will produce a beer unique to you. Very difficult to replicate. Second, even with a tried and true slam dunk homerun touchdown of a recipe, we all do the same thing. "Yeah I brewed this one up, but I subbed c-60 for the c-40, and upped the carapils to a pound" We cant leave perfection alone anyhow! Denny Conn is a great brewer, and makes some unbelievable recipes, and not only is he always willing to share, but if you reach out to him, he will also give you secrets and tips on how to tweak each one. His recipes are always simple and repeatable, but still everyone says something like "hey I brewed Denny's RyeIPA the other day, but this time I did____!" He has already done the trials and tweaks, why mess with it? But we do.
I have no problem personally sharing, and if I do win, I think it cool that my recipe is posted. However most comps dont even do that anymore. The UMMO used to post all the recipes on their winners, however the year I took a first, they stopped doing it! So my name is listed, but not a link to my recipe. I did however submit one. So chances are even if you conform, no one will probably see it anyhow.
The information is also helpful for the judges when sampling the entry. Many times the judge will send the steward to the admin table looking for information to shed light on a possible off or unknown flavor.
