Homegrown hops?
I'm planning try growing hops it next season, and looking for any advice or tips from experienced local hop growers. I've read the studies of the U of Vermont, successful growing of hops in New England is possible, but disease can be a problem because we have such a wet climate. I'll probably try growing juggles, as they are fairly disease resistant. Really looking to pick the brain of someone who's actually doing it or has done it.
Thanks
Jacab
I've tried the last two seasons with no luck, but I wouldn't let that discourage you... I was born with a brown thumb, and I can kill anything that grows. Based on my lack of success, I'd suggest making sure you get quality rhizomes (don't just order cheap ones from some random online garden supply place like I did), and make sure they get plenty of sun (too much shade at my house). Also, have you checked out the article on this topic in the "Library"?

I decided to listen to the brewing network for the first time yesterday. They were replaying the show with the hop grower/owner of Hop Union.
He listed a few hearty varieties. Cascade was one of them and I can attest that it does very well in this area. I believe he said that the higher alpha hops generally do better.
I also grow Mt Hood and Willamette, and they are horribly wimpy compared to the cascade.
They really are a weed, so make sure you're ready for them. They will spread and climb up anything they can. And if there's nothing to climb, they'll run across the ground and root themselves.
I'll show yaw if you're at the next club brew.
