Are you using pellets or whole hops?  The only time I use a hop bag is when I'm using whole hops and only then if I'm using enough to make it hard to get them out.  I would leave room for expansion as they do suck up quite a bit of wort.

I'm using pellet.

Personally, I just say throw them in.  I've never really seen anybody use a hop bag for pellets, although I'm sure some people do.  Once they get wet they disperse pretty good and you would need a really tight weave to contain them, which of course means lower extraction.  If I was doing a recipe with lots of whole hops in the boil or dry hopping, then yea I'd use a hop bag.

now, i can see you throwing them in if you are doing all-grain, but wouldn't you want to use a bag for extract?

You guys know I've not been brewing very long.
The DRAFT brewing club had their Christmas party a couple weeks ago.
I did get some tips from them since they love to brew.
Even wit extract just throw the pellets in.

From what I was told your better off to use a secondary for this, cool your batch, drop it 10 to 20 degrees before racking to sec.
The sediment will fall to the bottom of the fermenter, I don't know why, or how this works, but it worked for my IPA, it has a lot less sediment in it then I thought it would. actually it's pretty clean.

Very little sediment in the bottom of the second fermenter.

my 2 cents

I don't know where I read or heard to put my hops in bags but I do.
I use pellets and always seem to have debris left in the bag after the boil.  So I am guessing that it just cuts down on sediment, and would imagine other effects if left in.

I never use a bag, and extract vs. all-grain shouldn't matter.  I use mainly whole hops, when you transfer from kettle to fermenter they make a nice filter bed to catch excess cold break.

Maybe re hashing same stuff but... I always use a hop bag even with pellets.  I leave as much room as I can in the small sock.  I do think this may cut down on stuff floating in the brew and sticking to the sides of the fermenter may make clean up a little easier.  I also use a secondary fermentation...

Cheers
