Hops Pics- July 31

Here is the progress on the Central IL hops I planted in May.  Doin pretty good for year 1.  This is 10 feet tall ten feet long and 4 feet wide .  Twine is suspended to the ground for bines to grow on.

Next year I will have to spread them out and make the whole deal 20 feet high.  Still proud of these!

Enjoy

Cascade and Centenial are 90% of the cones now, these are on the side facing west.  Very little production on sid facing east (willamette, tennager, glacier)

Those are looking pretty good for first year hops.  I wouldn't worry about the Willamette.   I had very little flowers my first year but they're going like crazy now.

very impressive growth.  my plants are only going to yield about a handful of cones in the second year.  Somthing is eating them I think.  I used vegatable pesticide, and it looks like it worked, but to little to late.

I would keep the grass trimmed low around the hops. I tried growing some for a couple years long time ago and cut worms kept killing them. they like tall grass and it on ly takes overnight for them to do their damage and the plant is done. Looks like a perfect cut straight across the base fo the plant real close to the ground.

thanks guys for the advice and comments.

I have had a lot of probs with the japenese beetles.

Not sure what to use for those things.

I originally used neem oil but have heard that will give the hops an off flavor,

Use this stuff.  Safer Brand 3 in 1 Organic Garden Spray

I can vouch for it.  You can try using it now but you're going to go through a bottle or two.  If your hops are already being attacked it'll be tough to get rid of all of them.  Next year use it routinely as preventative maintenance and you'll have less problems.

Figured I'd keep this thread going and post a couple pics of my second year hops that I took today.

Heres a link to a site that has several options in helping fight the japanese beetles.

Great link, thanks!

Has anyone had any experience planting repellent plants near the hops?
