Hops Shelf Life
How long will hops pellets generally last if kept in the refridgerator?
I bought some pellets last weekend to start my new brew, but am having trouble locating sweet orange peel (any suggestions?) so they have been sitting in my fridge for a week. The green color is starting to fade and they are turning a slight brown. I know from my books that brown is bad, but they dont look rancid... just slightly brown. I pulled a pellet out and broke it in half... still green on the inside.
I plan to brew in the next few days, and hope to use the hops (and malt) I bought last week.
Yeay or nay?

They degrade more quickly in refrigeration temps than freezer, though if packaged correctly, the only drawback should be needing more hops to get a desired effectthan had they been stored in the freezer.

this was a question i had a few weeks ago here is the link.
damn cman you beat me! lol!!!
But what if they have been stored in a normal plastic bag in the fridge and are turning slightly brown... when do they become no good?
If they were in ziplocs and not well sealed, or not in barrier bags, they might be "good" for 6-9 months. I wouldn't use them after 6. If they smell cheesy, they're bad.
You know, the preceding just about sums it up.
Add a couple of truisms, like:
a) there is nothing as good as fresh hops. Everybody has to learn what do do with second best for at least part of the year.
b) If you have tooooo much fresh hops, Freez'em.
c) If you have gone through a harvest period, empty the freezer. There just isn't any point in keeping old hops. (unless you are really into the old hops recipes)
and
d) pellets are easy, fresh hops are tasty
Ayone have more?
