How did you start in brewing?
How did everyone first get into brewing? It always interests me how people find their niche in life!
I am actually going to get my first home brew kit next week! I'm pretty excited!
My ex and I used to make beer and wine from kits many years ago. We go interested because his father used to make wine from scratch and had actually won prizes for his wine, coming second in Canada way back in the late '70s for one of his wines. My former sister-in-law photocopied his recipes and notes and gave a copy to my ex. I don't know if he ever tried from scratch or not. We used to have a couple dozen of the old "stubby" beer bottles. I kind of miss them.
I remember when I was a kid my Grandpa made his own wine all the time. I remember being amazed that you could make your own wine. I miss those days!
I accidentally made grapefruit wine once when I left about a quarter litre of grapefruit juice hiding in the back of the fridge. LOL. I don't suppose that counts, really, does it?
Sounds yummy! lol
LOL, why not you hide them in the back side or your home or in lawn or upstairs, where no one can see or goes. I hope it was captured by someone from house.
I discovered that the grapefruit juice was happily fermenting in its bottle. The discovery actually kickstarted the urge to make wine again on purpose. LOL.
I'm always a little suspicious when the fruit juice starts to ferment on its own--I'm never sure that's safe to drink! Whatever wild yeasts are running around in my refrigerator...
I wouldn't say brewing is my "niche," but I love the idea of doing things at home that people don't often think of as being home-doable anymore. I'll shake heavy cream until it turns into butter, I'll knit socks, and I love the idea of making my own mead. I do it rarely, because it's such a production, so I only have two successful batches to my name. But boy were they good! My husband keeps asking me when I'm going to try again.
One of these days I'll try other wines, as well. My mother-in-law gave me a neat book full of wine recipes, and one of them is Onion Wine. Says the book, "Surprisingly delicious. Just don't tell your guests what it is until they've told you how good they think it is." Sounds fascinating!
My housemates in London decided to give it a try - so I joined in!
Home brewed for years after that.
