Mash Tun
Can I mash in a galvanized steel trough. It looks to be about 100 gallons.....3ft by 2 feet. If I drill a hole could this work?
I am not sure about the compatability of the galvanized steel with food stuffs, but my gut reaction says no.
Regardless of that, you'll need to insulate it and have a lid on it for the mash period.

Definately not.
I install fire suppression systems for a living, and completed a five year apprenticeship. Usually fire sprinker systems are considered potable(drinkable) water systems. However, when we install any type of system that is nomally filled with air, usualy to prevent freezing or to protect electronics, we use galvanized pipe. Galvanized metal is not approved for any type of a potable system. The galvanizing coating is considered to be toxic. It's mostly zinc oxide and I'm not sure what else goes into it, but I do know that it is not food grade. Galvanized metal is mainly used in applications where you don't want the metal to rust. In fire suppression applications, wet and dry systems both need to flow water once a year to check the alarms. This annual getting wet and then dry again in a dry system will speed rotting out of the pipe, compared to if it were wet all the time. That's why we use it. But I wouldn't put it any place in my brewing system.
