Newer hop varieties
I am looking at making my fruity hop pale ale again, a clone of Widmer W07... I loved that stuff!
Today at the homebrew shop, the owner showed me some hops from NZ I had never seen before. You guys might be interested. Less than $5 for 2 oz. Right off the package...
Super Alpha, 13.3% AA, mild spicy with pine and lemongrass
Riwaka, 5.1% to 5.8% AA, strong grapefruit and citrus
Pacific Hallertauer, 5.3% AA, orange and floral aromas
Hallertauer Aroma, 7.3% AA, mild floral with hints of lime
These particular packages are from Brewcraft in Portland, so I have no idea if they are sent to other homebrew shops, but I can't imagine that only Portland gets these varieties.
Also, a couple of hop varieties that I only heard of in the last year, but can not find. Summit and Nelson hops. I know Nelson are from NZ, not sure about Summit. Those are a dwarf variety. My store owner said she carried them for a couple months but they sold out quickly. Widmer Bros often gets some exotic hops, they collaborate with local farmers to try new varieties. Right now on tap they have a TEAser XPA, almost tastes herbal, and X-114 IPA. I think they said X-114 is experimental and not on the market yet.
Just some varieties to look into.
Saw some of these here in Montana. Shop keeper recomended one variety as a good substitution for cascade (the Riwaka I think). She had some Cascade as well so I stuck with what I know, anyway I might try them out for one of my next batches.
