Northern Brewer and Lakeside Brewery
I was looking at the Northern Brewer website yesterday and I see they are collaborating with Lakeside Brewery in Milwaukee (along with the beers they already had from Townhall Brewery and Surly Brewing in the Twin Cities), and offering four of Lakeside's beers in kit form. I ordered their Fixed Gear kit, I haven't had it but my daughter says she really likes it, and we have similar tastes in beer. My older daughter, that is. The younger one drinks those hop bombs that make my eyes cross and send chills up and down my spine. ![]()
I think it is kind of cool that at least a few regional craft breweries are offering their beers in kit form to the homebrew community. I know if you ask, some breweries will share their recipes, some will give tips and hints and some you would think are guarding state secrets.
Does anyone else know of any other home brew shops that are working with local craft breweries and offering kits to the public? Or is Northern Brewer kind of an anomaly?
Rebel Brewer has some Rogue kits.

I know Austin Homebrew has clones of a lot of beers, but I think they make them up themselves, without working with the breweries.
I finally got my Fixed Gear brewed today. Not sure what I did wrong, I hit my mash temp exactly, didn't have a stuck sparge or a boilover and the OG was a little high. It's almost like I'm getting to know what I'm doing or something...............![]()
Started my Elf Tonic yesterday. It is a malted, spiced cider. Kind of my own recipe. I steeped a pound and a half of C80 and a pound of carapils and then added 6.3 pounds of Munich LME and an ounce of Willamette.. Four sticks of cinnamon and a teaspoon of nutmeg with 10 minutes left in the boil. Ended up with three gallons of 1.090 wort. Pitched some rehydrated T-58 and it took of like a shot. Figured I would let the yeast chew on the malt sugars before I added the cider. Three gallons of fresh pressed pasteurized local cider. I'll see what it tastes like when it has fermented out, if it needs more apple flavor I'll rack it in to the secondary with a bunch of chunked up Granny Smiths.
The wort was a little heavy on the nutmeg, but it should be diluted when the cider is added. Might have to add a little cinnamon to balance out the spices.
I think it's going to turn out pretty good. I'm hoping, anyway. My daughters always liked Leinies Apple Spice, and I told them I should be able to brew something better. I guess time will tell.

Primary - Elf Tonic
Lakeside Brewery's Fixed Gear
Secondary - Gewurztraminer
Bottled - African Amber (only four left
)
Rye IPA
Blonde Ale
Dirty Belgian Blonde
Next Up - An Oktoberfest Ale (yea, I know it's late, but I can drink them any time of year)
A Porter (would like to do a Bourbon Barrel Porter, but don't know if I have time before Christmas)
Just got an email from Midwest Supplies announcing they have just come out with a couple kits made in conjunction with a couple breweries, and a homebrew club. They have Schell's stout, and an Amber ale from Half Moon Bay. they also have a kit for "Chocolate Covered Beavr Nutz" from Beavr Homebrew Club, that is inspired by the taste of peanut butter cups.
haven't had anything from Half Moon Bay, but I have had Schell's, and they make some tasty brews.
Good deal. They sound like some tasty beers. Although for a hoppy amber I will probably stick with bruguru's African Amber. Although the Lakeside Brewery's Fixed Gear kit I got from Northern Brewers turned out very nice. I might have to try the Stout kit from Schells. I have never been a big fan of Stouts, but then again I was never much for hoppy beers until I started brewing either. I have always heard good things about Schells but have never had their beer before. I know when you get across the river into the Land of the Mud Ducks Schells is kind of an institution, and you can find their beers around here but distribution is kind of spotty. I see this years Snowstorm is a Wee Heavy. I'm going to be looking for that one.
So many beers, so little time.
either last year or the one before the snowstorm was a baltic porter, and it was delicious.
